The Garage Door Safety Test Almost Nobody Runs

A garage door is the only appliance in a house heavy enough to kill a child, and it is the one almost nobody tests. Federal rules have required an external entrapment protection system on residential openers since the early nineteen nineties, which means essentially every opener installed in the last three decades has photo eyes and an auto reverse. What the rules cannot require is that either one still works, and both fail quietly.
The failure is quiet because the door keeps working. A misaligned photo eye does not stop the door opening. A worn out force setting does not announce itself. The safety system is the one part of the door whose failure produces no symptom at all until the day it is needed.
This is the part of a service visit that is easy to skip and easy to check yourself. When people look for garage door repair in long beach ca they are almost always calling about a noise or a door that stopped moving, and the safety test gets left out of the conversation entirely, on both sides.
The two systems, and why there are two
They protect against different things and neither replaces the other.
The photo eyes
Two small sensors sit near the floor on either side of the opening, roughly six inches up, pointed at each other. One sends an infrared beam, the other receives it. If anything interrupts the beam while the door is closing, the door stops and reverses.
This is the system that protects against something that is already in the opening. A child, a pet, a bicycle.
The force reversal
Independent of the beam, the opener monitors how much resistance it meets. If the door hits something solid on the way down, the increased load trips the reversal and the door goes back up.
This is the system that protects against something the beam does not see, which is anything lying flat on the floor below the beam height, or anything that enters the opening after the beam has already been cleared.
A door needs both. The beam does not see a toddler lying down. The force reversal does not stop the door touching them.
Testing both, in about two minutes
Do this twice a year and after any service visit.
The beam test
With the door open, start it closing and wave a broom handle through the opening near the floor, keeping your hand well clear. The door should stop and go back up immediately.
If it keeps closing, the beam is not being interrupted, which almost always means one sensor is not seeing the other in the first place and the opener has been running without functioning eyes.
The reversal test
Lay a solid object flat on the floor in the middle of the opening. A length of timber laid flat is the traditional choice. A roll of paper towel works.
Close the door. When it contacts the object it should reverse within about two seconds.
If it stops but sits there, or worse, if it pushes and keeps pushing, the force setting is wrong and needs adjusting.
Never use a person or a pet for this test, and never use anything you would mind being crushed.
Reading the sensor lights
Most photo eyes have small indicator lights and they tell you nearly everything.
Steady light on both, usually one green and one amber or red depending on the brand, means the pair is aligned and seeing each other.
A flickering or extinguished light on the receiving side means alignment has been lost. The usual causes are mundane. Someone knocked one with a bin. A bracket has loosened and the sensor has drooped. A spider has built a web across the lens, which happens far more often than anyone expects. Low sun through the open door can also blind a receiver at certain times of year, which produces a fault that appears at four in the afternoon and vanishes by evening.
No light at all on either side is a wiring problem. The staple holding the wire to the framing is a classic culprit, because it eventually cuts through the insulation and shorts the pair.
Realigning is usually a matter of loosening the wing nut on the bracket, moving the sensor slightly until the light goes solid, and tightening it again. It is a genuinely simple job and it is worth doing properly rather than living with an intermittent fault.
The signs a safety system is being worked around
There are a few things worth looking for, particularly in a house you have recently moved into.
Photo eyes mounted higher than about six inches. Somebody has raised them to clear an obstruction, and in doing so has raised the height at which the beam sees anything.
Photo eyes pointed at each other but mounted on the wall rather than the track, sometimes taped in place. A temporary fix that became permanent.
A wall button held down to force the door closed. Holding the button typically overrides the photo eyes by design, for the case where a genuine sensor fault is stopping a door that must be closed. Used habitually it means the household has been operating without entrapment protection for however long.
Any opener old enough to have no photo eyes at all. These exist, they are legal to keep using, and they have no external entrapment protection of any kind. On a house with small children this is the strongest argument for replacing an otherwise working opener.
Force settings, and why they drift
The reversal threshold is not a fixed number. It is set relative to how much force the door normally needs, and it is adjusted at installation.
The problem is that the door’s normal force does not stay constant. As springs age and lose tension, the door gets heavier from the opener’s point of view. As rollers wear and start to skid, friction rises. Both push the everyday operating force up towards the reversal threshold.
Two things follow. First, the door starts to nuisance reverse, stopping partway down for no visible reason, and the common response is to increase the force setting to stop it happening. Second, once that setting has been raised, the door will now push considerably harder on anything in its path before it decides to reverse.
That is the sequence to watch for. A door that has started reversing for no reason is not asking for a higher force setting. It is reporting that something mechanical has changed, and the honest fix is the springs or the rollers.
What to ask for on a service visit
Ask for the reversal test to be performed in front of you at the end of the job, with a solid object on the floor. It takes thirty seconds.
Ask what the force settings were before and after. If they were increased, ask what mechanical reason made that necessary.
Ask for the photo eye brackets to be checked for tightness, not just alignment. An aligned sensor on a loose bracket will drift again within weeks.
Ask whether the beam height is at the height it should be, particularly if the eyes look higher than knee level.
The one that matters most
Of everything above, the single highest value habit is the flat object reversal test twice a year. It takes almost no time, it needs no tools, and it is the only test that verifies the system that protects against the thing the beam cannot see. A door that passes it is doing the job it was designed to do. A door that fails it has been failing silently for an unknown length of time, and there is no way to find that out except by testing it.
