Garage Door Safety With Kids and Pets: The Two Tests Nobody Runs

Your garage door weighs as much as two adults, moves through a space your family walks through, and has two safety systems you have probably never tested.
The Two Systems
Since 1993, every residential garage door opener sold in the United States has been required to carry entrapment protection. There are two independent mechanisms, and the reason there are two is that each catches what the other might not.
The photo eyes. Two small sensors facing each other across the opening near floor level. One sends an infrared beam, the other receives it. Break that beam while the door is closing and the door must stop and reverse.
The contact reversal. If the door meets an obstruction on the way down, it must reverse on contact, using force settings in the opener head.
The beam catches things in the path before contact. The contact reversal catches what the beam missed, which includes anything below the beam or outside its line.
Test Them This Week
Both together take under two minutes.
The beam test. Start the door closing and wave a broom handle through the gap between the two sensors. The door should stop and immediately reverse.
The contact test. Lay a piece of two by four flat on the garage floor in the door path. Let the door close onto it. On contact, it should reverse and go back up.
Flat, not on edge. That is the standard test position.
If either fails, stop using the opener until it is corrected. Use the manual release and operate the door by hand in the meantime.
Do both monthly. Put it with something you already do.
The Failure We Find Most Often
Sensors mounted too high.
Photo eyes belong below six inches from the floor. That height is deliberate: the beam exists to catch a small child sitting or crawling in the door path, or a cat lying in the opening. Both are low to the ground.
We regularly find sensors zip-tied at knee height or higher.
The reason is almost always practical rather than careless. The sensors sit exactly where bins, bikes and recycling boxes live. They get knocked, the door starts refusing to close, and somebody eventually solves the recurring annoyance by moving them up the wall.
The door then works reliably. That feels like the problem being fixed. What has actually happened is that the beam now passes over the top of exactly what it was fitted to catch.
The correct fix is to reset them low and protect them with a simple guard, or move whatever keeps knocking them.
Why the Contact Test Gets Skipped
Because letting a door close onto a piece of timber feels like deliberately breaking something.
It is not. It is the designed test, the door is meant to reverse, and if it does not, you have found something genuinely important.
It is also arguably the more critical of the two tests in a house where the sensors have been raised, because at that point the contact reversal is the only protection left.
Openers Older Than 1993
If your opener predates 1993 it has no photo eyes, because they were not required.
That means one system instead of two, and that single system is a contact reversal whose force settings may not have been checked in decades. A door that pushes down with enough force to overcome resistance is doing so on whatever is underneath it.
With small children or animals in the house, that is a straightforward case for replacing the opener rather than adjusting around it. Modern units also include battery backup, which California has required on openers sold or installed here since July 2019.
The Wall Button
Mount the wall control at least five feet from the floor, out of a small child’s reach, and where the person pressing it can see the whole door.
Both halves matter. Height stops a garage door becoming a toy. Sightline means whoever operates it can see what is happening and stop it.
Pinch Points
Modern garage door sections are shaped so that fingers cannot be caught between panels as the door folds. Older doors often are not.
If your door is older and you have a child at the height where the joints are reachable, it is worth looking at how the sections come together as the door moves. Guards exist and are inexpensive.
Also worth checking that no exposed hardware, brackets or cables sit where small hands can reach them.
Teach the Release
Show everyone in the house who is old enough where the manual release cord is and what it does.
It is the red cord hanging from the trolley on the ceiling rail. Pulling it disconnects the door from the opener so it can be moved by hand.
It matters in a power cut, and it matters when a spring breaks and the car is trapped. A safety feature nobody knows about is not a safety feature.
A Short Monthly Routine
- Beam test with a broom handle.
- Contact test with a two by four laid flat.
- Glance at sensor height and whether anything is leaning near them.
- Listen for anything that has changed.

What Actually Happens When a System Fails
Worth being concrete, because “the safety systems failed” is abstract enough to be easy to postpone.
A garage door closing under power applies real force. That is by design, because it has to overcome the friction of ten rollers, the weight of the door not perfectly balanced by the springs, and whatever wind is pushing against it. The contact reversal exists to detect resistance and give the force back.
When that reversal is out of adjustment, the door does not detect the resistance. It keeps applying force to whatever is in the way, and it does so silently and without hesitation, because as far as the opener is concerned nothing unusual is happening.
The photo eye beam is the layer that prevents contact in the first place. Which is why a beam mounted at knee height is worse than useless: it gives the appearance of protection while covering the wrong volume of space.
A Note for Grandparents and Visitors
If children visit rather than live with you, the risk profile is arguably worse rather than better.
A child who lives in a house learns its rhythms. They know the garage door is loud, they know to stand back, and the adults around them have adapted. A visiting child has none of that, and the adults are often distracted by the visit itself.
If you have grandchildren or nieces and nephews who come and go, the two tests above are worth running before they arrive rather than at some point in the year. It takes two minutes and it removes an entire category of thing to keep half an eye on.
